Tonight’s adventure took me to a place I had never considered venturing to before. I have crossed over Scomotion Creek many times while entering and exiting the city of Plattsburgh, but never considered kayaking into the marshland around it.
Scomotion Creek is much more of an inlet than a creek. There are no tributaries feeding the creek, just a long narrow inlet through low-lying marshland surrounded by tall cattail reeds, homes, and power lines. Not your typical Adirondack Coast scene, but still enchanting. The drone of commerce buzzing over bridges faded off into the distance as we paddled deeper into the marsh. The sounds of the frogs, birds, and insects drowned out the drone of the trucks passing over the interstate behind us.
This often overlooked creek turned out to be a very welcome and easy retreat after a long day at work. I’ll surely be back again soon. This short, beautiful paddle through the urban drone turned out to be a very relaxing retreat from the daily grind.
