What I did today on the Adirondack Coast……. A visit to The Champlain Wine Company

There’s a quaint little slice of a building on City Hall Place that’s unlike any other in Plattsburgh. If you’re visiting downtown Plattsburgh for a few days, one day, or even for just one hour, Stop in to the Champlain Wine Company at 8 City Hall Place to sample some unique local and New York Wines from right here in our own back yard. That’s what I did today on the Adirondack Coast.

The Champlain Wine Company, in the city of Plattsburgh, is a locally owned and operated wine tasting business aimed at the promotion and sale of locally produced wines. It isn’t normal for me to visit a business as a part of my blog, but this is a very different type of business. Vineyards are sprouting up all along the Adirondack Coast. The local wine producers have grown to six commercial vineyards and wineries producing very unique wines from a special variety of cold hearty grapes.

I had the pleasure of meeting with one of the areas local winery operators, Natalie Peck. Natalie Peck and Colin Read began planting a vineyard at their farm in Mooers, New York in the Summer of 2008. To date they have 4,000 cold hardy grapevines that are producing new and interesting wine varieties that thrive in this region. The Champlain Wine Company tasting room was opened at the end of October 2011 at their location in the heart of Downtown Plattsburgh as the only off- site tasting room in the region in order to bring their product into the population center. They carry a variety of wine from some of the local wineries and other wineries across New York State to promote the special and unique wines produced with 100% New York Product. All the commercially operating wineries in New York State use only New York grapes and juices for that unique New York flavor found only here.

The Adirondack Coast’s group of wineries will be open soon to visitors for wine tastings and sales. The Champlain Wine Company is open year round,Wednesday – Saturday 12am-8pm, and Saturdays 12am-6pm.

Why should you visit? The Champlain Wine Company can be your first link to the Adirondack Coast’s quickly growing wine producing vineyards. Step inside this quaint, beautiful shop to taste wine, chat with friends, purchase local and New York wines, and maybe even pick out a new piece of artwork from local photographers. The Champlain Wine Company has three options for wine tastings. The Basic tasting is $3 with a choice of five wines. the Special Tasting will run you $5 with a choice of seven wines and a charm for your wine glass. The third is a book of tastings for $20 which you can give as gifts or to introduce yourself and three others to a wine tasting of seven varieties and includes four wine glass charms. Looking to treat someone to a special locally grown gift? The Champlain Wine Company also provides wine gift baskets ranging from one to four bottles per basket.

Add the Champlain Wine Company to your to-do list the next time you visit downtown or the next time you have a spare hour to stop in, relax, and enjoy the flavors of the North Country.
